Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my first appointment?

As a first-time patient, please bring:
  • Your current pair of glasses
  • Your current pair of contacts (along with the box they came in)
  • A copy of your latest Rx if possible

Are you going to dilate my pupils?

Dr. Roden recommends dilation every 2 years for most and every year if you have a condition (such as diabetes) or symptoms (such as floaters or flashes) that require a more frequent retinal examination. The pupil is the only window to the back of the eye which houses the retina. The purpose of the dilation is open the pupil so the doctor can make sure your retina is healthy. You have the right to decline dilation at your visit. We also have a retinal camera that is able to take a wide picture of most of the retina, making the doctor less reliant on dilation. The dilation lasts 4-6 hours where you are light sensitive, have blurry reading/computer vision, and possibly have blurry vision at a distance. People who are near sighted are usually able to drive home after their appointment but others who are far-sighted are not able to. You can reschedule your dilation to a different date if needed.

How much will my exam cost?

Please visit our Services page for a price breakdown.

What Insurances do you take?

We do not take medical insurance, only vision insurance.
Vision insurances: We currently accept VSP, Eyemed, and MES vision (until 12/31/2023). We do not take VSP plans that are associated with Medi-cal.

**all insurance plans are different, and we need to know the information of your individual plan in order to give you a quote. All co-pays and professional fees must be paid at the time of service.**

Can I put new lenses in an existing frame?

The short answer is yes! However older frames are more likely to break during the process of removing the old lenses and inserting the new lenses. We and our labs take the upmost care to prevent breakage, but unfortunately breakage can happen. All customers who would like to use existing frames agree that Oak Optometry is not liable for damage or responsible for providing replacement parts. New frames are under warranty and therefore we are able to provide replacements.
